About Ang Mo Kio Neighbourhood

Ang Mo Kio, also known as AMK, is a residential town and a planning area in Singapore. It is located in the North Eastern part of Singapore, roughly 11km north of the Central Business District. Ang Mo Kio also holds the record for the third highest most populated planning area in the North-East region, and sits in the 8th position in terms of population in the country in whole. 

The planning area, Ang Mo Kio is bounded by Yishun planning area in the North, Serangoon in the East, Bishan to the South and the Central Water Catchment to the West.

The first part of the name, “Ang Mo” from Ang Mo Kio originated from the Chinese character ang moh which means “red hair”. “Kio” is being interpreted as the bridge in Chinese, thus Ang Mo Kio would mean “Caucasian’s Bridge”.

Prior to the fast-paced development in Singapore, Ang Mo Kio used to be uninhabited land filled with secondary forest or swamps. HDB then rebuild it in 1973 as the 7th satellite town, fully developed by 1980. It is also recognised as the first 3 town councils in 1986 as part of HDB’s new initiative to improve their service to the residents.

Today, Ang Mo Kio house a total population of 163,950 sitting on 13.94 km²

There are more than 50,000 units currently. In addition, several plots of land including Lentor Hills area with many private residential projects are being constructed on these sites. Latest BTO launch in Aug 2022, Central Weave @ Ang Mo Kio, has a total of 896 units which cater largely to bigger families.

Ang Mo Kio being a mature estate, remains a popular neighbourhood in Singapore. With a well connected road infrastructure, that has easy access to CTE, and as well as the established schools in the town such as Anderson Serangoon Junior College, residents will be glad to know there are many more amenities in the area that can serves the best family living environment.
